Why Is Your Brain Trying to Protect You?
Imagine it’s late, and you had to stop by the grocery store to grab a few things. As you walk back to your car, you hear footsteps behind you.
Without thinking about it, your shoulders tense. Your breathing changes. Your heart beats a little faster. You become more aware of everything around you.
Nothing has happened.
And yet your body has already begun to react.
Why?
Because your brain isn’t waiting to find out whether you’re in danger. It’s trying to protect you before danger ever arrives.
This is one of the most remarkable things about being human. Without you even being aware of it, your brain is constantly scanning your environment, your thoughts, your past experiences, and even the signals coming from inside your own body, asking one simple question:
“Am I safe?”
Most of the time, this process happens completely outside of your awareness—or even your control.
Your brain adjusts your heart rate without asking permission.
It changes your breathing.
It controls digestion.
It influences your immune system.
It changes muscle tension.
It determines what captures your attention.
It even affects how much energy you have throughout the day.
In other words, your nervous system isn’t simply reacting to the world around you—it’s constantly making predictions about what might happen next and what you’ll need to stay safe. It builds those predictions from your past experiences, your current environment, and the signals coming from your own body.
When those predictions are accurate, they’re an incredible gift.
If you touch a hot stove, pain causes you to pull your hand away before serious damage occurs.
If a child runs into the street, your body moves before you’ve consciously processed what happened.
These protective responses are fast and reflexive because they need to be.
But protection doesn’t always look dramatic.
Have you ever noticed that your shoulders creep toward your ears during a stressful day?
Or that you hold your breath while reading an email you’ve been anxious to receive?
Maybe you’ve had butterflies before giving a presentation, or found yourself lying awake the night before an important event.
None of those experiences mean something is “wrong” with you.
In fact, you’ve probably experienced several of them this week.
They’re examples of a nervous system doing exactly what it evolved to do: preparing you for what it perceives as important.
Sometimes, however, our protective systems can become more protective than they need to be.
Think about a smoke alarm.
A well-functioning smoke alarm can save your life during a house fire.
But if it starts blaring every time you make toast, the alarm itself becomes the problem—not because it’s broken, but because it’s become overly sensitive.
Our nervous systems can behave in much the same way.
Let’s go back to that grocery store parking lot.
You hear the footsteps, your body reacts, and then you turn around. It’s an older woman slowly pushing her shopping cart toward her own car.
Do your shoulders relax? Does your heartbeat slow?
Maybe they do right away. Maybe they don’t.
That depends on your past experiences, the current state of your nervous system, and countless other factors that help your brain decide whether it’s truly safe to let its guard down.
After an injury, a period of high stress, illness, surgery, trauma, or even months of poor sleep, the brain can become more protective than it once was.
Muscles stay tense.
Stress feels bigger.
Sleep becomes harder.
Energy drops.
And for many people, pain—or other protective responses—can continue long after tissues have healed.
This doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real.
It means the alarm system has become more sensitive.
Understanding this idea has transformed the way scientists and healthcare professionals think about persistent pain. But I believe it has something to teach all of us—not just people living with chronic pain.
Your body isn’t trying to work against you.
It’s trying to work for you.
It’s trying to keep you safe.
The challenge isn’t convincing your body to stop protecting you.
The challenge is helping your brain recognize when it is truly safe to ease that protection.
That’s why sleep matters.
Why movement matters.
Why supportive relationships matter.
Why time in nature matters.
Why breathing exercises, mindfulness, laughter, and moments of genuine connection can have such powerful effects.
None of these are magic fixes.
But each one sends small signals of safety to a nervous system that is constantly listening.
Let’s go back to that parking lot one last time.
You’ve realized there isn’t actually a threat. Maybe you pause for a moment. You take a few slow, relaxed breaths. You notice the lights around you, hear cars driving by, and remind yourself that you’re safe.
Your shoulders begin to soften.
Your breathing becomes easier.
Your heart rate slows.
Little by little, your brain receives new information:
The danger has passed.
Your nervous system can begin to ease its protection.

We’ll look at why pain doesn’t always equal damage, how the nervous system learns, what helps it calm down, and how small daily habits can influence the way we feel.
Because when you begin to understand why your body does what it does, something important happens.
Fear begins to give way to curiosity.
And curiosity is often where healing begins.
This Week’s Reflection
Over the next few days, simply begin to notice your body’s protective responses.
When your shoulders tense…
When your breathing becomes shallow…
When your heart starts racing…
Or when you feel pain, stress, or overwhelm…
Pause for a moment and ask yourself:
“What might my brain be trying to protect me from right now?”
You don’t need to judge the response or immediately try to change it.
Just notice it.
Notice what your body is trying to communicate.
And if the reaction feels bigger than the situation in front of you, gently wonder whether your brain might be drawing on experiences from the past rather than responding only to the present.
The goal isn’t to criticize your body’s reactions.
The goal is simply to understand them a little better.
Because understanding is often the first step toward healing.
